THE QUEER CASH IN
The Queer Cash In is a collaborative campaign with the Blankfaces, which hopes to raise awareness of homelessness within the LGBTQ+ community and how big corporations cash in on queer pride without giving back to the community.
The designs will be available to pre-order from the Blankfaces website! Proceeds will be split between the designers and grassroots LGBTQ+ charities in Manchester.
The campaign includes designs from Euphorius Design's Empty Pride collection and Euan McFadyen's "77" design, which is based on both the 1977 Act of Parliament, one of the first steps taken by the government to help homeless people, as well as the statistic that almost 50 years later, 77% of homeless LGBTQ+ people say they are homeless due to their LGBTQ+ identity.
Empty Pride is based on the experience of walking down Edinburgh's Princes Street in summer, every window is filled with either rainbows and hearts or Scottish flags and tartan, selling brightly packaged pride while vulnerable people sit ignored right outside their doors.
This image inspired the motifs of LOVE and Pride as if pasted in a shop window with the silhouette of a rough sleeping figure cut out of them, to represent their exclusion from commercialised pride.
The event was covered by Vibe Manchester! You can watch the video here, featuring interviews with Gerard, Euan and myself.
